PoCo Daily Digest June 17th, 2016

Friday:   Police incident in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam resolved – Shortly before 9 a.m. this morning, Coquitlam RCMP responded to reports of an explosive device at a RainCity Housing building in the 3000 block of Gordon Ave in Coquitlam. Soon after, a male suspect was located by police in the 3000 block of Lougheed Hwy in Coquitlam and was placed under arrest at approximately 9:08 a.m.

As a precautionary measure, the homeless shelter and neighbouring businesses were evacuated as investigators searched and cleared the building for any potential risk to public safety. Information suggested that the male had visited the probation office earlier in the morning. Therefore, both the Port Coquitlam Court House and probation office were evacuated as a precaution, as these buildings may have also been at risk. With the assistance of the RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit and the Integrated Police Dog Services Section, the evacuations were lifted just after 12 p.m. As a result of the searches, no explosive devices were located and the reports were confirmed unfounded. There were no injuries related to the incident.

The 25 year-old male remains in police custody and is facing potential criminal charges.
